Kalachakra Mandala

Kavita Bala, with student Liz Popolo and monks from Ithaca's Namgyal Monastery, created a presentation of two- and three-dimensional models and animations to visualize the grand palace depicted in a Kalachakra mandala, a traditional sand image created by Buddhist Monks. The piece was displayed together with the mandala itself at the Johnson Art Museum. Sept 07

SCA best paper award

Doug James and his just-defended Ph.D. student Jernej Barbic (CMU) has received the best paper award at the 2007 ACM SIGGRAPH/Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation for their paper Time-critical distributed contact for 6-DoF haptic rendering of adaptively sampled reduced deformable models. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Kavita Bala a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant. This sum of $450,000 over the course of 5 years is titled "Scalable Rendering for Visual Realism in Scale-Complex Scenes". Feb 07
